Typing Consistency and Endurance: Why Your Best Score Is Not Your Real Score
Your best run is a snapshot. Employers, exams, and long documents care about what you deliver across minutes—not the one burst you remember. Consistency and endurance turn peak performance into a reliable average.

Why your best score is not your real score
Leaderboards reward Peak WPM. Work rewards session average. If Peak is 85 and Average is 68, you are effectively a 68 WPM typist who occasionally spikes. The gap is the problem this stage solves.
Track best vs average gap weekly. Shrinking that gap matters more than raising Peak alone.
Variance: WPM and accuracy
WPM variance and accuracy variance across runs show stability. Low variance means predictable output; high variance means you cannot plan throughput.
Use consistency practice to rehearse even pacing. The goal is not excitement—it is repeatable rhythm at 95%+ accuracy.
Completion rate and consecutive passed runs
Completion rate measures how often you finish a set without abandoning or restarting. Restarts hide bad data and train quitting when difficulty rises.
Consecutive passed runs at your accuracy floor prove streak quality under light fatigue. Two passed runs back-to-back is a start; five is a habit.
Long-run WPM, decay, and fatigue point
Long-run WPM tracks speed over extended passages. Compare early segment WPM to late segment WPM. WPM decay and accuracy decay show when form breaks.
Your fatigue point is where decay accelerates—often minute three in a five-minute set for newer typists. Endurance practice should spend deliberate time just past that point, not only in comfortable early minutes.
Run duration and sustained combo metrics help you see whether you maintain streaks of correct characters deep into a session or only at the start.

You are ready for number typing when session average stays within about 8% of Peak WPM across ten sessions at 95%+ accuracy. That proves peaks are becoming normal, not lucky.
If the gap will not close, drop Peak chasing for a week. Slower consistency sets that match Average beat more sprint tests.
A consistency-first week
Monday and Wednesday: consistency practice—aim for even pacing, 95%+ accuracy, no mid-run restarts. Log session average and Peak after each day.
Tuesday and Thursday: endurance practice—extend run duration until you find your fatigue point, then practice one more minute just past it at reduced pace if accuracy drops.
Friday: review ten-session log if you are near graduation; otherwise one light accuracy cooldown. Avoid hero speed tests on tired Fridays—they inflate best-vs-average gap.
Reading decay curves
Plot mentally: minute one WPM, minute three, minute five. If minute five is more than ten percent below minute one at the same accuracy target, you have measurable WPM decay. If accuracy falls while WPM holds, that is accuracy decay—often fixable with slightly slower pace rather than more speed work.
Sustained combo length tells you how long clean streaks survive. Short combos late in a run mean endurance work should emphasize streak maintenance, not raw pace.
Endurance without sacrificing the accuracy floor
Longer runs are not an excuse for 90% accuracy. If duration forces errors, shorten the run and add sets. Three clean five-minute runs beat one messy fifteen-minute run for building long-run WPM you can trust.
Use completion rate as honesty check: finishing planned sets matters. Abandoning when fatigue appears trains quitting. Scale duration down until you can complete—then grow duration weekly.
Ten-session log for the 8% rule
Create ten rows: date, session average, Peak WPM, accuracy. Compute percent gap: (Peak − Average) / Peak. When the gap stays at or below about eight percent for ten sessions at 95%+ accuracy, you have met the graduation bar.
Outliers happen—one bad night. Drop the worst session only if you can name an external cause (illness, new keyboard). Do not drop sessions just to pass math.
Why variance matters more than another Peak
Hiring managers and teammates experience your average, not your leaderboard moment. Variance is the statistical face of that truth. Shrinking WPM variance and accuracy variance means coworkers can predict how long your share of a document will take—valuable even when Peak is merely respectable.
Pairing consistency with speed tools
After a consistency week, a single speed challenge can show whether peaks moved up without widening the gap. If the gap widens, return to consistency sets—not more challenges.
Session average vs long-run WPM
Session average summarizes everything you did today. Long-run WPM emphasizes sustained segments inside one run. Both should move toward Peak over weeks. If session average is good but long-run WPM collapses after minute four, endurance is the bottleneck—add duration before adding pace.
Consecutive passed runs as a confidence metric
Passing means you met your accuracy floor for a complete set without restart. Two passes in a row is luck; four or five is skill. Track consecutive passed runs on consistency days only—mixing challenge modes into the count dilutes the signal.
Sample two-week consistency block
Week one: four consistency sessions logging session average and Peak. Week two: add two endurance sessions, continue three consistency sessions. End of week two, compute best-vs-average gap across the last five consistency days. If gap is still above eight percent, repeat week two before numbers stage.
