This page documents how Typing Speed RPG calculates its core typing metrics, turns individual runs into practice feedback, and limits the conclusions readers should draw from a score.

WPM and raw WPM

The standard speed and practice tests use the conventional five-character word. Correct WPM equals the number of correctly entered characters divided by five, divided again by elapsed minutes. For example, 250 correct characters in one minute produces 50 correct WPM. Spaces and punctuation can be part of the prompt and are evaluated as characters when the test includes them.

Correct WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes

Some focused practice routes also report raw WPM. Raw WPM uses all typed characters before correctness is applied: typed characters divided by five and then by elapsed minutes. Correct WPM is the primary comparable output because it does not reward incorrect entries. The five-character convention is a measurement unit, not a claim that every natural-language word contains five characters.

Accuracy and errors

Accuracy compares each entered character with the character expected at the same prompt position. Correct characters are divided by total typed characters and multiplied by 100. If 190 of 200 entered characters match, accuracy is 95%. An error is an entered character that does not match its expected character. When a route records backspaces separately, that count describes correction behavior and does not silently turn an earlier wrong keystroke into a correct one.

Accuracy % = (correct characters ÷ total typed characters) × 100

A 95% accuracy floor appears in several practice suggestions. It is an internal coaching heuristic used to encourage control before more speed; it is not a universal research threshold, accessibility rule, classroom grade, certification, or employer requirement. A reader can choose a different threshold based on the task and the cost of an error.

Weak keys and trend metrics

Weak-key practice counts mismatches by the character that should have been entered, sorts those counts from highest to lowest, and surfaces up to five expected keys with the most errors. This is a prompt-level diagnostic, not a medical or ergonomic assessment. A key can appear weak because of unfamiliar words, keyboard layout, finger choice, punctuation, or the text sample itself.

Practice history can produce average WPM, peak WPM, variance, completion rate, best-versus-average gap, correct-character streaks, and session averages. These values use recent locally stored runs from the relevant practice surface. A peak represents the best observed run in that sample; it should not be presented as sustainable speed. Variance describes how spread out recorded WPM results are, while the average gives a more stable view than a single personal best.

Number-entry metrics

The 10-key test measures correct keystrokes per minute (KSPM), keystrokes per hour (KPH), numeric entries per minute (NPM), and accuracy. KSPM equals correct characters divided by test minutes. KPH is KSPM multiplied by 60. NPM counts only correctly entered digits per minute, so operators or decimal points do not inflate that digit-only metric. Accuracy uses the same correct-versus-total comparison described above.

Published KPH ranges and progression suggestions on this site are practice reference points unless a page names an external standard. Real jobs can define keystrokes, permitted corrections, data formats, duration, and accuracy requirements differently. Results from this browser test should not be represented as an employer-issued certification.

Fair comparison and limitations

Compare scores only when the important conditions are similar: test duration, prompt language, character set, punctuation, capitalization, keyboard layout, physical keyboard, input method, and text difficulty. Short tests react more strongly to a fast burst or early mistake; longer tests reveal endurance but can be affected by fatigue. Browser timing, background work, assistive technology, device performance, and focus interruptions can also influence a run.

Typing Speed RPG does not claim that game use guarantees a particular improvement, academic outcome, job result, or health benefit. The RPG battle score rewards game actions and timing windows and is not a substitute for WPM or accuracy. Use the dedicated tests for comparable measurements and the battles for practice motivation. Stop or adapt practice if it causes pain or conflicts with accessibility needs.

Storage, examples, and revisions

Scores, preferences, progress, and recent-run history are primarily stored in the browser’s local storage. They can be cleared in browser settings and may not transfer to another device or browser profile. The Privacy Policy explains analytics, advertising, and information voluntarily sent through the contact form. Professional practice prompts use fictional or synthetic examples; readers should never enter real confidential records into a drill.

This methodology is reviewed when scoring code or displayed metrics materially change. Substantive changes update the reviewed date.
